Back to CLEO… With a Difference!

Banner image for the reader to learns about the 2 short courses the author is offering at the CLEO Conference. There are 3 sub images:
1. name of conference in the middle: CLEO which stands for Conference on Lasers and ElectroOptics
2. on the left side an image containing words like cultures, diversity, creativity etc/ with the name of the short course this image refers to: SC534 Managing Diversity in STEM
3. on the right side a plot of the electromagnetic field intensity of a fundamental guided mode in a step index fibre, calculated by Finite Element Method by the author with the short course number and name below to which the course refers: SC410 Finite Element Method

I am looking forward to CLEO 24 in May.

This time will be slightly different, and I’m excited to share with you that I will be teaching 2 short courses:

SC410: Finite Element Modeling Methods for Photonics and Optics: This course is one I love teaching for PhD students, PostDocs and industry professionals. I cover basics of numerical modelling methods for Photonics and introduce the theoretical framework for FEM, with some examples/applications. With this course, I try and convey the fundamental understanding users need to for modelling. Quite often, users may not have training in numerical methods, or FEM etc., and they use commercial software (Comsol, ANSYS, Lumerical etc.) without requisite support on the basics of the Physics and mathematical considerations. I hope to address these key concepts that many get wrong when using the bewildering and complicated software/s with so many settings! A digital copy of the course notes is given to all participants.

I love hearing from attendees and often people discuss their research problem with me to get tips on the modelling.

Sign up now for SC410 on Monday, 06 May, 08:30 – 12:30, if you have not already.

SC534 – Managing Diverse Teams in STEM: this has me SO EXCITED!!! For the first time (after I pushed and had support from the Short Course Chairs) I will teach a practical, interactive, workshop style course on Diversity and Inclusion. While social justice has been in the news and on our minds for some time, there haven’t been many structured, realistic and effective leadership course in our community. STEM is one of the most diverse industries- so here I give real life, impactful, evidence based ways to manage diverse teams. No prior experience, learning is required: only an interest and willingness to engage positively.

The course is on Tuesday, 07 May, 10:30 – 14:30. Sign up now! Scan this QR code to send me your questions/interest topics in advance or use this link.

It feels great that I will be able to bring both my passions (Science and Social Justice) in one conference, in the community closest to my heart. I look forward to seeing you at CLEO.
